Fall Fashion Article – Men’s Essentials

For me, the most important thing is simply picking things you like. Seem easy? Oddly enough, people tend to fall into fashion ruts; they might find something they like but think, “I can’t wear that.” Bull. Don’t focus so much on a style, look for pieces you like. For me, it’s all about film. A lot of my recent purchases have had some connection to something I’ve seen on the big screen: a Michael Jackson jacket, Marty McFly shoes and a Steve Zissou beanie. So to recap: focus on things you like.

Let’s start with the outermost layer. This jacket makes me think of something I saw in “She’s the Man.” The character Paul wears this jacket that looks like a suit jacket, but he keeps the cuffs rolled up. A jacket like this is nice because it makes any ho-hum outfit look slightly more formal and therefore slightly more planned. Translation: it’s a good thing to throw on if you have a presentation and woke up with ten minutes til class starts.

Now, for the shirt. This crew neck makes me think of the movie “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.” I only saw a portion of the film, but I really like the feel of the movie. Oddly enough, none of the characters wear shirts like this, but the movie and this shirt share an oceanic theme. The connection might just be in my brain.

Finally, we’ve got the shorts. As a proud child of the 80s, I like the higher cut on the shorts. It makes them feel a little more vintage. They, along with the shirt, have this aquatic feel to them (and I do love the ocean). The muted blue is a good “pop color” because it goes well with blacks.
Whether you’re wearing sweat pants and a t-shirt or a skinny suit and wingtips, meditate on the words of the notorious fashionista, Tim Gun, and “Make it work.”
