What You Don’t Know About M&D

There’s always a little bit of hope and anticipation when you check your mailbox to see if there is a piece of mail, or better yet a yellow slip letting you know you received a package. What most students do not know is how much work goes on in the mail room.Sue Hatt, Duplicating Service Assistant, has been working in the mail department for the past six years and has grown to love her busy job here at Spring Arbor University (SAU). Hatt is married and has one daughter who is 26. Her great-nephew who is in kindergarten currently lives with them and keeps her busy. Hatt enjoys the time she spends with her family at home since her husband works out of town. When talking about her family, she said, “God is good.”Hatt did not know much about the university when she applied for the job. Hatt said being in a Christian environment is one of the things she likes best about working at SAU.Most students do not know what goes on behind the scenes in the mail room. There is a lot of work to be done and there is never a dull moment. Hatt said people do not realized the volume of packages that arrive daily. Getting the packages logged into the computer can be quite time-consuming.Sue said the most challenging thing about this job is meeting deadlines and prioritizing. Every day is different and there are always a variety of jobs to be done. The office works with incoming mail, outgoing mail and duplicating.

Hatt said the beginning of the semester is always the busiest printing time, but there are many machines such as copiers and printers which can help a lot.

You may wonder why there are specific times students can pick up their packages. It keeps the mail room less chaotic and helps the workers to prioritize, knowing how much time they have to get a certain job done. Hatt also said when students work in the mail room, they better understand why there are specific times to pick up packages.

Hatt said she has found herself really enjoying working in the Christian environment at SAU. She said she loves the people she gets to work with, especially the student workers.

“The people who you deal with day in and day out are pleasant people,” Hatt said. “The people in this department are upbeat and positive.
