“Mirror Mirror” movie review
The fairest of them is once again on the run from an evil queen (Julia Roberts). In honor of the 200th anniversary of the fairy tale “Snow White” the director Tarsem Singh, who also directed “Th
e Fall,” took the challenge of recreating this well-loved story.
The movie demonstrates Singh’s mastery of costume and color. The fantasy lives through the vibrant, almost obnoxious, color schemes that demonstrate stark contrast between the muted poor and neon royalty. The playful persona of Julia Roberts fits the role of the ridiculously vain queen.
The dwarves each have their own personality stereotype from Chuckles to Napoleon. The dwarves are quirky, charming and somewhat love-struck with the fair Snow White. Unlike the original macabre of the brothers Grimm, this rendition is hilarious in obscurity and characters. Not only is this movie like watching a work of art, but also it is a good, clean laugh.
Tarsem is a master at churning out avant garde yet relatable and deeply profound films. His ability to take the lighthearted story of Snow White, increase its entertainment ability and hilarity and still make a true work of art is very impressive.
Although very family friendly, this is no film that parents sit through for the sake of their children. Whether it is the queen hilariously bemoaning her inability to yell at a shirtless prince or Snow White discovering her aptitude for being both a domesticated hostess and a fierce rebel leader, the film is wrought through with entertaining social themes.
The elaborate grooming rituals of females, the instilled helplessness of privileged children, and the misuse of taxes are three examples of current social issues that are portrayed in Mirror Mirror. These issues are presented with a light heart and lacking the burdened tone of a sermoned agenda. The characters are unique and lovably distinctive and the parts that deviate from the classic storyline are understandable and easily accepted.
All in all, “Mirror Mirror” is an extremely satisfying rendition of the beloved Snow White tale with modern flavor added in just the right moderation.
