The road to the post-season for the Spring Arbor University men’s basketball team (21-8, 10-5) got a little snowy as they lost back-to-back games versus Bethel and Indiana Wesleyan for the second time this season. But Spring Arbor was able to bounce back once again, this time winning two consecutive games of their own. The Cougars defeated potential first round opponent Grace 80-64, then turned around and sent Richard Blair, the List twins, and Rob Boss out in style on Senior Day, beating Huntington 79-64.
Those victories assured that the Cougars will host at least one round of the Mid-Central Conference tournament and, thanks to that same Huntington team (the Foresters beat St. Francis 103-87 Tuesday night), could end up avoiding back-to-back games versus Goshen and MCC Player of the Year frontrunner, Erick McCollum.
There’s been a huge misconception around campus about where the Cougars can finish in the conference. But this is how it currently stands:
If Spring Arbor loses their game Saturday versus Goshen, they will have to settle for the 4 versus 5 match-up in the first round of the MCC tournament. However, if they do beat Goshen, they will also need Bethel to take care of business at St. Francis in order to sneak into the third seed for the conference tournament and play either Grace or Huntington in the 3 versus 6 game.
Even though the road is more clear for the Cougars now, and definitely a lot less snowy, the student body is still calling for a white out no matter who comes to the SAU Fieldhouse next Wednesday at 7:00.
